'A stunning moment in sport': Black Fern Sevens wow with Olympic haka after NZ's first gold win

"Going out on top and down in history!"

Our Black Ferns Sevens wāhine know all about winning Gold after earning New Zealand’s first medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The NZ team triumphed with a 19-12 win against tough competition from the Canadian side.

After the medal ceremony, our ladies launched into a mighty haka and it might just be the heartiest performance we’ve seen in a while - emotions are off the charts!

Aotearoa was watching from home and are sharing the celebrations with the team.

One commenter wrote: “Our heroes. Inspiring our babies, daughters, and moko to come. Fantastic tournament, and the result you/the Nation were hopeful for. Going out on top and down in history as our first gold medalists at the Paris 2024 Olympics.”

“This was one of the most stunning things I have seen in sport,” said another. “Bloody amazing!”

While a third said: “Powerful! So proud! Class act ladies on and off the field!”

Others were stoked to see injured Black Fern Sevens’ Shiray Kaka get involved with the celebratory haka.

Back in May, Shiray tearfully shared she had to let go of her “Olympic dreams” after tearing her ACL on her left leg.

All wasn’t lost though, she later revealed she was heading to the games as a reporter with her husband Gillies and as we’ve seen she's been the NUMBER ONE supporter for her teammates.

“Can you tell I'm proud?!??!?!!” Shiray wrote alongside a video of her capturing the team's reactions to their incredible win.

This is a back-to-back gold win for the ladies after bringing home the top prize at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Looks like we’ve marked ourselves as the ones to beat in 2028, eh?

Well deserved wāhine!
